Maria Valtorta is a holy woman in Italy. She was born in 1897. Her father was a military officer and her mother was a teacher. When she was 23 years of age, she was accidentally and seriously injured by a young man. Since then, she became permanently paralyzed but she still continued to participate in pastoral activities of the Catholic Action. When she was 35 years old, she began to lie in bed all the time.

She was like Lilian Barnes with whom we are familiar, who had envisioned a conversation with Jesus, and then wrote a book about it. When she was 46 to 50 years old, she finished writing “I have seen the Gospel”. She passed away in 1961.

The founder of Hong Kong Studium Biblicum, Venerable Fr. Gabriel Allegra O.F.M. had stated that, “it was her talent and mysterious grace which coordinate intricately, that made things so perfectly.”

Here, I will record the incident when Mary served her cousin Elizabeth when she was in labor:

Mary came up the stairs along the rooms, on a starry night, like a white angel, entering Elizabeth’s room.

“Oh, Mary, Mary, I’m in pain. I can’t stand this anymore. Mary, in order to be a mother, how much pain should we endure?” Mary, who was by her side, tried hard to caress and kiss her.

“Mary, Mary, let me put my hand on your belly!”

Mary held Elizabeth’s swollen hand, and put it tightly on her bulging abdominal area. Now there were only the two of them. Mary said to Elizabeth, “Jesus is here. He can hear you and also see you. Trust in Him! His sacred heart is beating very fast, because He is helping you due to your goodness.”

As we can see, it is not difficult for us to understand the essential meaning of “through Mary, to Christ”.
