“He must grow greater, I must grow smaller.” (John 3:30)

The Bosco Bible Society has this translation in place: “Taking the opportunity when his disciples were complaining because of jealousy, John once again testified to Jesus. He identified himself as ‘the bridegroom’s friend’, his task being to lead the bride (chosen people) to the bridegroom (Christ). Because the bridegroom has already appeared, the one leading should now retreat. Just like with the rising sun, the stars will fade away. Christ comes from God. He is ‘God’s Appointed One’ who reveals to the world the will of God our Father. Therefore, everyone should go to him for salvation.”

John did not stop baptizing with the appearance of Christ, up until he was imprisoned by Herod. Being someone who comes before, not just baptizing followers, he also debated for the truth. His imprisonment and death sentence are all because of his declaration of Herod’s immorality. John’s two disciples, Andrew and John, followed Jesus right after they met him. The fact that John the Baptist gave his approval is to be expected. The inter-relationship between John the Baptist and Jesus, according to the gospel, is not much. But from the mouth of Jesus toward John’s description, it is pretty deep: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the breeze? No? Then what did you go out to see? A man wearing fine clothes? Oh no, those who wear fine clothes are to be found in palaces. Then what did you go out for? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet.” (Matthew 11:7-9)

Today, every Christian also has a mission like John, that is “I am a voice that cries in the wilderness: Make a straight way for the Lord.” (John 1:23)

I know quite a lot of brothers and sisters converted to follow Christ owing to the loving action of faithful followers. We might not be good in speech. However, it is not words that can change people’s hearts, but unconditional love.

Let us all be a forerunner for Christ.
