“Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew ‘Rabbouni,’ which means Teacher.” (John 20:16) This Mary was the Mary of Magdala who has been possessed by seven devils. When Jesus called her name, she recognised Jesus immediately. Before Jesus spoke, Mary of Magdala thought he was a gardener. (Didn’t know how much Jesus’ appearance has changed!) However, His voice did not change. On hearing Jesus’ voice, John the Baptist confirmed Jesus’ status as the Messiah. He said, “I am not the Messiah, but that I was sent before him. The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; the best man who stands and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice.” (John 3:28-29) Jesus also spoke in a parable, saying : “… whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber. But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hears his voice, as he calls his own sheep by name and lead them out. When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.” (john 10:1-5) Today, the Good Shepherd Christ is also calling us ceaselessly. Can we recognize his voice? Of course, Jesus is not using the voice of man but the voice of the Holy Spirit to call us. So, in the absence of internal calmness and quietness, we cannot hear the voice of God. For example, Pilate asked Jesus, “What is the truth?” It was because he did not have the mood to listen that the opportunity was gone forever.
