“Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:21) The following passage is from the book of the prophet Isaiah, “The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the lowly. To proclaim liberty to the captives, to proclaim a cure to the blind, setting free the oppressed, to announce a year of favor from the LORD. (Isaiah 61:1-2; 58:6) “And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.” (Luke 4:22) The initial response by the people or in reality, the scribes despised the thought of Jesus, because they said, “Isn't this the son of Joseph?” This is a language with derogatory remark, because Joseph was a carpenter and not an intellectual. No wonder after the people heard Jesus say, “No prophet is accepted in his own native place.” “They were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. (Luke 4:24, 28-29) Jesus was persecuted for speaking the truth. When people believe that they are rich with foresight, they will not be able to see with eyes nor hear with their ears. “Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” (Luke 18:17)
