“Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:21) The Gospel of Luke ensued “All spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.” Jesus spoke graciously for he actively put his words into actions. In the eyes of the people they easily noticed that Jesus must be the one as described by the prophet Isaiah, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The prophet Micah predicted that the Savior of the Israelis was going to be born there, but this place was little known about after the period King David had built his capital in Jerusalem. Jesus was born in a city of insignificance for he was not given a proper bed to stay. There was only a wide cave opening and the manger, which provided food for the animals. The first visitors were the most poor and humble shepherds. We can imagine that when Holy Family fled to Egypt, they faced many dangerous obstacles during their journey. As a carpenter for thirty years, Jesus was looked down by the world for he had no lofty social status. “Isn't this the son of Joseph?” was certainly not a word of praise. However, Jesus did not care much about the unkind attitude of others as he acted as a witness from a grassroots identity. The real constraints of humanity are not poverty, nor the fate of being captured, but rather selfishness, conceit and arrogance. The salvation Jesus brings is simplicity, humility and obedience.
