“Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!” (Mark 6:50) After Jesus sent his disciples to go by boat to the other side of the sea, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. Around the fourth watch of the night (10 pm), strong winds blew across the sea. Jesus walked on the water, coming toward them and meaning to pass by them. It was difficult to understand why the disciples left Jesus by himself on the shore. It was possible that if the disciples did not leave, the crowd, making up of thousands of people, might not disperse. The result was Jesus successfully dismissed the big crowd. Jesus’ genuine rest lied in his union with the Father in his prayers. Looking from the mountain, Jesus found that the disciples were rocked by the waves. His heart still stayed with them. How could a good shepherd forget his sheep? Jesus was full of humor! Because he was trying to pass by them! An astonishing description was added in Matthew’s Gospel to delineate the situation : “Peter said to him in reply, ‘Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.’ He said, ‘Come.’ Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how〔strong〕the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’ After they got into the boat, the wind died down.” (Matthew 14:28-32) Jesus’ actions were varied, beyond people’s imagination : he not only walked on water himself, he even helped Peter to walk on water. He was willing to let the disciples understand how much he loves every one who trusts him.
