A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 2:16-21
16 And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; 18 and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. 21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

For the life of the world
O Virgin full of courage,
may your spiritual strength
and trust in God inspire us,
so that we might know
how to overcome all the obstacles
that we encounter
in accomplishing our mission.
Teach us to treat the affairs
of the world
with a real sense of Christian responsibility
and a joyful hope
of the coming of God’s Kingdom, and
of a “new heaven and a new earth”.
You who were gathered in prayer
with the Apostles in the Cenacle,
awaiting the coming
of the Spirit at Pentecost,
implore his renewed outpouring
on all the faithful,…
so that they might more fully respond
to their vocation and mission,
as branches engrafted to the true vine,
called to bear much fruit
for the life of the world.

Cardinal Schönborn speaks in Medjugorje
(Source: medjugorje-online.com)
On December 30, 2009, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Archbishop of Vienna and a member of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, gave a powerful, lengthy talk at St James Church in Medjugorje.
The cardinal’s talk revolved around the theme of God’s mercy, and he did not hesitate to praise Medjugorje.
His first words as he stepped to the podium were “Hvaljen Isus i Marija,” a Croatian phrase that means “Praised be Jesus and Mary.” This is a common greeting among the visionaries and Medjugorje villagers. The cardinal repeated it several times and urged the crowd to repeat it with him.
He went on to say, “When you look at a place like Medjugorje, you can see a superpower of mercy. Many merciful deeds were born here or they were supported here.”

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 1:1-18
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God; 3 all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. 9 The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. 11 He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. 15 (John bore witness to him, and cried, “This was he of whom I said, `He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.’”) 16 And from his fulness have we all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known.

When Jesus is not with us
You ask me, “Are there people who are so miserable that they do not desire Christ to be among them?” Yes, we ourselves are, fighting among ourselves.
Someone will respond in an ironic way, “What are you saying? Can’t you see that we are all under the same roof, in the same church… and praying together…! What division do you see among us?”
Here we see none, but when our assembly is over, we criticise one another… We are diffident to one another, we fear one another, we whisper in the ear of a neighbour and when another person approaches we fall silent and change the subject…
“We do not do this to offend the others, we say, we do it for protection.” That is exactly what makes me suffer. While living among brothers, we feel the need to be on our guard against wrongdoing, and we feel it necessary to take all kinds of precautions…
“However”, you will say, “I have been offended.” If your neighbour has hurt you, pray God to be merciful to him. He is your brother, a member of your body. He is invited to the same table as you.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 2:36-40
36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phan’u-el, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity, 37 and as a widow till she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks to God, and spoke of him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39 And when they had performed everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

A Community of brothers
Are the faithful united in love, in the charity of Christ? Then this is certainly a living parish. Here is the true Church, for here the divine and human phenomenon that prolongs the presence of Christ among us is thriving …
How wonderful it would be if our parishes could show in a convincing way what Christian society should be like! What I mean is that people who at first do not know one another, being different in customs, in upbringing, origin, age and so on, meet in church and turn out to be and feel themselves to be, nuclei of brothers and sisters.
They become friends, they help one another, they never speak badly of others. On the contrary, they seek out the sick in order to care for them, they seek out the unemployed to help them. In a word, wherever there is some good to be done for the benefit of a neighbour, they have a ready heart and a commitment to say: this is Christ calling me.
Remember the solemn words of Christ. They will know that you are my disciples…if you love one another; if there is warmth of affection and feelings; if there is sympathy, created by us, that drives us to do more than we can, with total spontaneity and hearts wide open, and the ability to generate Christ in our midst, which is a result of feeling united in Him and for Him
