St. Sylvester I

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 1:1-18

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God; 3 all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. 9 The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. 11 He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. 15 (John bore witness to him, and cried, “This was he of whom I said, `He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.’”) 16 And from his fulness have we all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known.

KOREA Mass Outside Catholic-run Hospital Supports Former Workers

 December 29, 2008

SEOUL (UCAN) – About 100 hundred people attended a Mass outside a Church-run hospital on the day before Christmas in support of non-regular workers whose contracts the hospital did not renew in September. The Korean Catholic Federation for Justice (KCFJ) organized the Dec. 24 Mass for former workers of Seoul archdiocese-run Kangnam St. Mary’s Hospital.

Father Benedict Ho in-soo distributes communion at Mass on Dec. 24 in front of the Seoul archdiocese-run Kangnam St. Mary’s Hospital.

“The first-class hospital in Gangnam (Kangnam), the richest area in the country, and the Church have rejected non-regular workers and driven them out,” Father Benedict Ho In-soo said during his homily. “As a Catholic priest, I feel guilty, and I sincerely apologize for this.”"We celebrate the unity of heaven and earth through the birth of Jesus. In the same way, I beg the hospital management and the workers to come together,” the Incheon diocesan priest urged.Lee Young-mi, one of the 28 workers whose contracts were not renewed, told UCA News the workers launched a sit-down protest in the hospital lobby on Sept. 30, the day the contracts expired, and have picketed since. They were dragged out many times before the hospital won a court order forbidding them to enter the building as of Nov. 7, recounted Lee, whom the others elected their representative early on. “The hospital management misunderstands us,” she said, “because our struggle will continue no matter what may come.”The 28, like many others in South Korea, were employed as “dispatched workers” by labor agencies. The agencies send these people to do jobs for companies that pay the agencies, not the workers directly. The Ministry of Labor classifies such employees as non-regular workers.According to a 2006 law, an employer must hire non-regular workers as full-time employees once they have worked two years for the employer.Lee said 20 of the 28 workers the hospital “actually fired” have found other work. “But even if we get a new job again as dispatched workers, within two years they will fire us, abusing the law on dispatched workers. That’s exactly what the hospital did to us.”Park Jeong-hwa, another of the eight workers who remains jobless, accused the hospital of abusing the law. In tears, she thanked the Mass participants for their support and prayers.During the Mass, which began at 3 p.m., KCFJ president Agnes Park Soon-hee pointed out that Catholics should not seek financial profit as their primary goal. The Church-run hospital was greedy for profit, Park said.“As a Catholic I felt so ashamed that I discussed the matter with other Catholic activists,” continued the general director of Woori Theology Institute, an affiliate of KCFJ. “We decided to organize the Mass for the workers on Christmas Eve, but we couldn’t find any priest willing to say the Mass except, finally, Father Ho.”

After the Mass, some of the jobless workers told UCA News their fight has been tough.“I feel depressed and heartbroken to spend Christmas season like this,” lamented Michael Hong Suk. “To me, the day of Christmas has been for helping people in need, something I did until last year. Now, the Mass has encouraged me to continue our fight.”Chun Sung-ja said the struggle has been especially tough on her 8-year-old son. “But I cannot give it up, because of our other comrades. We rely very much on each other, and that is the important thing right now,” she declared. However, Lim In-hee, general manager of the Human Resource Management Team of the hospital, complained about the Mass. In an interview on Dec. 26, she said the hospital had not been notified about it in advance. She confirmed the hospital had no plan to re-employ any of the former dispatched workers. Instead, it hired 14 new dispatched workers and rearranged assignments among regular workers.
