Statue on Apparition Hill was vandalized (Aug 29, 2008)

(Source: Medjugorje - Caritas)

The statue on Apparition Hill was vandalized some time last night. The Community of Caritas members were told earlier through Marija, that the left arm and nose were broken. It has been reported to the police and is under investigation at this time.

The picture clearly shows the damage done to the statue on Apparition Hill. (The nose and arm are missing).

The statue was found desecrated around 5:00 a.m. Friday morning by pilgrims who had gone up early to pray.

The Language of Love

Gospel Commentary for 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

By Father Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap

ROME, AUG. 29, 2008 (Zenit.org).- In this Sunday’s Gospel we hear Jesus who says: “Whoever wants to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. Because whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

What does it mean to “deny” yourself? And why should you deny yourself? We know about the indignation of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche over this the request of this Gospel.

I will begin answering these questions with an example. During the Nazi persecution, many trains full of Jews traveled from every part of Europe to the extermination camps. They were induced to get on the trains by false promises of being taken to places that would be better for them, when, in fact, they were being taken to their destruction. It happened at some of the stops that someone who knew the truth, called out from some hiding place to the passengers: “Get off! Run away!” Some succeeded in doing so.

The example is a hard one, but it expresses something of our situation. The train of life on which we are traveling is going toward death. About this, at least, there are no doubts. Our natural “I,” being mortal, is destined for destruction. What the Gospel is proposing to us when it exhorts us to deny ourselves, is to get off this train and board another one that leads to life. The train that leads to life is faith in him who said: “Whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live.”

Paul understood this transferring from one transport to another and he describes it thus: “It is no longer I who lives, Christ lives in me.” If we assume the “I” of Christ we become immortal because he, risen from the dead, dies no more. This indicates the meaning of the words of the Gospel that we have heard. Christ’s call for us to deny ourselves and thus find life is not a call to abuse ourselves or reject ourselves in a simplistic way. It is the wisest of the bold steps that we can take in our lives.

But we must immediately make a qualification. Jesus does not ask us to deny “what we are,” but “what we have become.” We are images of God. Thus, we are something “very good,” as God himself said, immediately after creating man and woman. What we must deny is not that which God has made, but that which we ourselves have made by misusing our freedom — the evil tendencies, sin, all those things that have covered over the original.

Years ago, off the coast of Calabria in southern Italy, there were discovered two encrusted masses that vaguely resembled human bodies. They were removed from the sea and carefully cleaned and freed. They turned out to be bronze statues of ancient warriors. They are known today as the Riace Warriors and are on display at the National Museum of Magna Grecia in Reggio Calabria. They are among the most admired sculptures of antiquity.

This example can help us understand the positive aspect of the Gospel proposal. Spiritually, we resemble the condition of those statues before their restoration. The beautiful image of God that we should be is covered over by the seven layers of the seven capital sins.

Perhaps it is not a bad idea to recall what these sins are, if we have forgotten them: pride, greed, lust, wrath, gluttony, envy and sloth. St. Paul calls this disfigured image, “the earthly image,” in contrast to the “heavenly image,” which is the resemblance of Christ.

“Denying ourselves,” therefore, is not a work of death, but one of life, of beauty and of joy. It is also a learning of the language of true love. Imagine, said the great Danish philosopher Kierkegaard, a purely human situation. Two young people love each other. But they belong to two different nations and speak completely different languages. If their love is to survive and grow, one of them must learn the language of the other. Otherwise, they will not be able to communicate and their love will not last.

This, Kierkegaard said, is how it is with us and God. We speak the language of the flesh, he speaks that of the spirit; we speak the language of selfishness, he that of love.

Denying yourself is learning the language of God so that we can communicate with him, but it is also learning the language that allows us to communicate with each other. We will not be able to say “yes” to the other — beginning with our own wife or husband — if we are not first of all able to say “no” to ourselves.

Keeping within the context of marriage, many problems and failures with the couple come from the fact that the man has never learned to express love for the woman, nor she for the man. Even when it speaks of denying ourselves, we see that the Gospel is much less distant from life than it is sometimes believed.

Ivan’s August 29, 2008 Prayer Group Apparition

(Source: Medjugorje - Caritas)

“Tonight when Our Lady came She was very, very happy. She greeted us by saying “Praised be Jesus my dear little children.” Our Lady then prayed for a long time for the conversion of sinners (perhaps because just hours before, the statue of Our Lady on Apparition Hill was desecrated, breaking Our Lady’s marble image’s arm and nose). Our Lady then prayed for a long time with Her hands extended overall of us present. She prayed especially for all sick people present tonight. After, Our Lady continued to pray with Her hands extended over all of us. She then blessed us all with Her Motherly Blessing. She blessed all the religious articles, rosaries, everything we brought for Her blessing. Ivan recommended all of our needs, our families and especially all of the sick. Ivan then spoke with Our Lady privately for a short time. After we prayed with Our Lady an Our Father and a Glory Be and then Our Lady left saying, “Go in peace my dear little children.” This is what is most important this evening with the apparition with Our Lady.”

(The Beheading of St.John the Baptist) - 八月二十九日

Director of Vatican Stamp and Coin Office reveals 2005 interregnum stamp story

.- The head of the Vatican Philatelic and Numismatic Office, Dr. Pier Paolo Francini, has revealed the story behind the stamps that were used at the Vatican during the interregnum period of 2005 after the death of Pope John Paul II.

The design used for stamps during that time came after one of his co-workers saw a fresco by the Italian artist Carlo Malli that he thought would be appropriate for the occasion.

Francini told the L’Osservatore Roman that “by tradition the stamps during a Vacant See should be printed as soon as possible.  The rest has to do with an event that takes place solely in the Vatican.”

“During a Vacant See period, the power to authorize the issuing of new stamps or coins falls, as with any other activity of the State, into the hands of the Cardinal Camerlengo (the head of the papal household) for a brief period, during which it is nevertheless necessary to reaffirm the continuity of the life of the State, without interruption, through the issuance of new stamps and printing of new coins,” he said.

Francini went on to note that “the announcement of the passing of John Paul II, filled me and my collaborators not only with sorrow but also with a certain anxiety because we would need to make these stamps, three in total, very quickly.  But 26 years had passed since the last Vacant See.  I vaguely remembered it, my collaborators were just kids, and many had never lived through one at all.  So there was a generational gap we had to overcome.  We had clear difficulties in beginning to design these stamps.”

“Finally some frescos from the Apostolic Room which one of our collaborators just happened to see one day came to our rescue,” Francini continued.  Three stamps based on the frescos were issued, he said, representing the Holy Trinity.

Once the new Pope is elected, the stamps for the Vacant See “should be immediately pulled out of circulation, they are no longer valid.  They can later be collected but they can no longer be used as postage,” he explained.

The three series of 700,000 stamps issued during that time carried the emblem used by the Vatican during a Vacant See period, which is composed of two keys underneath a canopy.

Francini also revealed that perhaps in September three commemorative stamps and a special coin for the Pauline Year will be issued.  He also said that special stamps will be issued in 2009 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Vatican City State.

Supreme Court in Mexico upholds law allowing abortion

.- Mexico’s Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of a law in Mexico City that allows abortion up to the twelfth week of pregnancy, in ruling called “historic” by abortion supporters who want the practice legalized throughout the country.

The justices heard arguments for three days from the Mexican Attorney General and the National Commission on Human Rights, who both said the law passed by the Mexico City Legislative Assembly in 2007 was unconstitutional.

On Wednesday it was reported that of the eleven justices, eight supported abortion and established a “majority opinion” that the rights of women should be given priority over the rights of the “unborn conceived.” The official vote on the ruling takes place on Thursday.

The justices in favor of abortion are Genaro Góngora Pimentel, José de Jesús Gudiño Pelayo, Juan Silva Meza, Fernando Franco González Salas, Sergio Valls Hernández, Olga Sánchez Cordero, José Ramón Cossío and Margarita Luna Ramos.

Those who dissented and found that life is protected by the Constitution from the moment of conception were Sergio Aguirre, Mariano Azuela and Guillermo Ortiz.

According to the Mexican daily El Universal, “Azuela was the only one who brought medical and scientific questions to the discussions aimed at defining when life begins.”

“The question was avoided by the ten other justices, who concluded that it was not for the Court to determine when life begins, since it is a question about which there is no agreement throughout the world and is not a legal question,” the paper reported.

Be patient

This is a true story which happened in the States. A man came out of his home to admire his new truck.

To his puzzlement, his three-year-old son was happily hammering dents into the shiny paint.

The man ran to his son, knocked him away, hammered the little boy’s hands into pulp as punishment.

When the father calmed down, he rushed his son to the hospital. Although the doctor tried desperately to save the crushed bones, he finally had to amputate the fingers from both the boy’s hands.

When the boy woke up from the surgery & saw his bandaged stubs, he innocently said, ” Daddy, I’m sorry about your truck.” Then he asked, “but when are my fingers going to grow back?”

The father went home & committed suicide.

Think about the story the next time u see someone spill milk at a dinner table or hear a baby crying. Think first before you lose your patience with someone u love. Trucks can be repaired. Broken bones & hurt feelings often can’t.

Too often we fail to recognise the difference between the person and the performance.

People make mistakes. We are allowed to make mistakes. But the actions we take while in a rage will haunt us forever.

Pause and ponder. Think before you act. Be patient. Understand & love.

Christians should imitate St. Paul’s passion for evangelizing, says Pope Benedict

.- During today’s general audience in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall, Pope Benedict XVI spoke about the life of St. Paul. Recounting that the Church honors the great missionary in a special way this year, the Holy Father said that Catholics should emulate Paul by sparing no energy and enduring trials for the sake of the Gospel.

After making clear the significance of this year as the 2,000th anniversary of St. Paul’s birth, Pope Benedict noted Paul’s Jewish birth in Tarsus, his Hebrew name “Saul” and his training as a “tent” maker. The Holy Father explained that from around the age of 12, Paul was instructed in Jerusalem in the strict Pharisaic tradition, on the basis of which, the future saint “viewed the Christian movement as a threat to orthodox Judaism”.

The great missionary, Pope Benedict noted, persecuted the Church “until a dramatic encounter on the road to Damascus radically changed his life.”

The Holy Father recalled Paul’s historical fame as a Christian and apostle, not as a Pharisee, and the saint’s three missionary journeys, which are told by St. Luke in the Acts of the Apostles. The three missionary journeys spurred the so-called Council of the Apostles, which decided that pagan converts to Christianity were not required to observe the Mosiac Law, the spread of the Gospel to Europe via Macedonia, the “birth” of the term “Christian in Antioch, and the writing of Paul’s Epistles.

Pope Benedict also highlighted Paul’s arrest and imprisonment in Jerusalem, and later in Rome. St. Luke closes his account of St. Paul’s life noting that that the great missionary spent two years of house arrest in Rome.

The Holy Father concluded by reminding his audience of St. Paul’s words: “I do everything for the sake of the Gospel.” With this summary of Paul’s journeys in mind, Pope Benedict continued, “Let us pray that the Lord, who made Paul see the light and know his Word and who touched the interior of Paul’s heart, … will also make us see the light so that our hearts may also be touched by his Word and so that we may also give the world the light of the Gospel and the truth of Christ, for which it thirsts.”

Pope Benedict indicated that next week’s audience address will focus on the conversion of St. Paul.
