Catholics have lived an intense Lent of preparation, with works of charity, for Holy Week and Easter Sunday

ASIA/CHINA - Catholics have lived an intense Lent of preparation, with works of charity, for Holy Week and Easter Sunday

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - Chinese Catholics have been living a spiritually intense Lent in preparation for Holy Week and Easter, through prayer and works of fraternal charity, in union with the Universal Church. According to information sent to Agenzia Fides, across continental China, in Hong Kong, and in Taiwan, all the parishes and ecclesial base communities are participating in various charitable and spiritual works. The following are examples of just a few of the activities taking place.
In the diocese of Tang Shan, in the continental province of He Bei, some 600 faithful participated in a Lenten retreat on Sacred Scripture. According to a local priest, “we help the faithful to live a simple faith, yet with sound doctrinal and biblical foundation. If we live Lent well, we will celebrate Holy Week and Holy Easter well, and we will be able to better understand the full meaning behind this intense liturgical season in the Church.” After 4 days of retreat, the faithful returned to their normal daily life and divided themselves into 4 teams for doing charity work. They have also begun 16 Bible-study groups, to spread the Word of God.
During the Lenten retreat held in the parish of Saint Ignatius in Hong Kong, a very contemporary theme was chosen for reflection and dialogue: “Youth Devastated by Drugs.” As the theme resonated with many, the faithful were moved to make a commitment to fight the tragic reality according to Christ’s teachings, in imitation of Jesus on the Cross.
Close to 90 people attended the retreat held in Assumption of Mary Parish in Keelung, in the Archdiocese of Tai Pei (Taiwan), that had as its theme: “For your sake, Jesus Christ became poor although he was rich, so that by his poverty you might become rich” (2 Cor. 8:9). In light of the coming Pauline Year, the priest encouraged the faithful to take an active part in evangelization. During Eucharistic Adoration, the priest helped the faithful to reflect on their life and to make an examination of conscience. About 60 people went to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, in preparation for Easter Sunday. (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 17/3/2008; righe 27, parole 352)

Parishes use Internet to promote Holy Week activities

ASIA/CHINA - Parishes use Internet to promote Holy Week activities

Tian Jin (Agenzia Fides) - The Catholic community in China is preparing for the intense celebration of Holy Week that will culminate with the feast of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. According to sources in communication with Fides, from the Diocese of Tian Jin, some parishes of the diocese have begun to spread word of their Holy Week activities to the faithful, using a parish website or through other traditional means of communication. The parishes of Shao Lin, Da Gang, and Bei Zha Kou, will celebrate the Pascal Triduum in union with the Universal Church, in the spirit of the Lenten Message from the Pope. In fact, in the announcements of the activities, they have also included quotes from the Pope’s Message. The faithful from the parish of Most Holy Savior will celebrate Palm Sunday in their parish, with lighting, thanks to their newly-installed electrical system. Due to construction, the faithful have had to attend other parishes for the celebrations or meet in a little room in the parish for Mass and for the Lenten retreat. On Sunday, the will finally be able to return to their Church and celebrate Palm Sunday and prepare for a Holy Easter. (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 14/3/2008; righe 14, parole 197)

“Death and Resurrection,” MOMENT OF CHRIST

READINGS
March 16, 2008

An excerpt from John Main OSB, “Death and Resurrection,” MOMENT OF CHRIST (New York: Continuum, 1998), pp. 68-70.

[T]he whole Christian tradition tells us . . .that if we would become wise we must learn the lesson that we have here “no abiding city”. . .[B]ut the principal fantasy of much worldliness operates out of completely the opposite point of view. . . [T]he wisdom of our tradition… .is that awareness of our physical weakness enables us to see our own spiritual fragility too. There is a profound awareness in all of us, so profound indeed that it is often buried for much of the time, that we must make contact with the fullness of life and the source of life. We must make contact with the power of God and somehow open our own fragile “earthen vessels” to the eternal love of God. . . .

Meditation is a way of power because it is the way to understanding our own mortality. It is the way to get our own death into focus. It can do so because it is the way beyond our own mortality. It is the way beyond our own death to the resurrection, to a new and eternal life, the life that arises from our union with God. The essence of the Christian Gospel is that we are invited to this experience now, today. All of us are invited to death, to die to our own self-importance, our own selfishness, our own limitation. We are invited to die to our own exclusiveness. We are invited to all this because Jesus has died before us and has risen from the dead. Our invitation to die is also one to rise to new life, to community, to communion, to a full life without fear. I suppose it would be difficult to estimate what it is people fear most—death or resurrection. But in meditation we lose all our fear because we realize that death is death to fear and resurrection is rising to new life.

Every time we sit down to meditate we enter this axis of death and resurrection. We do so because in our meditation we go beyond our own life and all the limitations of our own life into the mystery of God. We discover, each of us from our own experience, that the mystery of God is the mystery of love, infinite love—love that casts out all fear. This is our resurrection, our rising to the full liberty that dawns on us once our own life and death and resurrection are in focus. Meditation is the great way of focusing our life on the eternal reality that is God, the eternal reality that is to be found in our own hearts. The discipline of saying the mantra, the discipline of the daily return morning and evening to meditation has this one supreme aim—to focus us totally on Christ with an acuity of vision that sees ourselves, all reality, as it is. Listen to St Paul writing to the Romans:

No one of us lives, and equally no one of us dies, for himself alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. Whether, therefore, we live or die, we are the Lord’s.

After Meditation, from W.S. Merwin, “The String.” In THE RIVER SOUND (New York: Knoph, 1999), p. 133.

THE STRING

Night the black bead
a strong running through it
with the sound of a breath

lights are still there from
long ago when
they were not seen

in the morning \
it was explained
to me that the one

we call the morning star
and the evening
star are the same.

(Passion - Monday)

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 12:1-11

Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Laz’arus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Laz’arus was one of those at table with him. Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. Jesus said, “Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Laz’arus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Laz’arus also to death, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
