33 Days Prayer Consecration Preparation for the Triumphant Victory of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Chiara Lubich concludes her earthly life, dedicated to spreading universal brotherhood in efforts to unite the human family in Evangelical charity

EUROPE/ITALY - Chiara Lubich concludes her earthly life, dedicated to spreading universal brotherhood in efforts to unite the human family in Evangelical charity

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - “In a serene climate, of prayer and deep emotion, Chiara Lubich ended, at the age of 88, her earthly journey tonight, 14th March 2008, at 2 am in her home in Rocca di Papa (Rome), where she had returned last night upon her wish, following her hospitalization at Policlinico Gemelli.” With these words, an official release from Movimento dei Focolari announced this morning the death of its founder, Chiara Lubich. All day, yesterday, hundreds of people went to her room to pay her their last respects, then stopped in meditation in the adjoining chapel and stayed around the house. It was an uninterrupted and spontaneous procession. To some, Chiara even managed to nod, despite being so weak.
Chiara Lubich, born in Trent in 1920, started a movement of spiritual and social renewal the Focolare. During the Second World War among the poor in the city of Trent there began what Chiara herself calls, “a divine adventure”. Today the movement has millions of affiliated persons in 182 countries. It brings together not only Catholics but also other Christians of more than 350 different communions, as well as Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and persons with not religious membership, all committed to live and spread universal brotherhood to help build up the unity of the human family. Concrete initiatives include “cittadelle di testimonianza”, project for economy of communion involving over 750 companies who devolve part of their profit to the poor, 1000 social works, particularly in developing countries, more than 12,000 adoptions at a distance.
Chiara Lubich wrote the Commentary, published by Agenzia Fides, on the Missionary Intention of the Holy Father for October 2002, which was: “That missionaries, whether priests, religious or laity, may have the courage to announce Jesus’ special love for the poor.” She wrote: “Love is the heart of the Gospel message. Christ himself demonstrated this with his words and works during his life on earth. This love is of a universal dimension which proposes as the law of life to all those who decide to follow Jesus: “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Mt 19,18; cf. Mt 22,39). Loving our neighbour, every neighbour, all those we meet on the path of life. “For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? (…) And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others?” (Mt 5,46-47)
This love is typically Christian: a love which makes no distinction, like the love of our heavenly Father who “makes the sun shine on all, good and bad, and the rain fall on all, good and bad”.
But undoubtedly, Jesus in his love for everyone, showed special love for the poor: he was concerned for all who suffered…
It is therefore particularly opportune to call attention to the place given to the poor in the life of Jesus. It is wonderful to underline that the poor were the first to receive his love and that the love we show to the needy will save us and allow us to share in the glory of the kingdom of heaven, as he himself promises when he speaks of the last judgement (cfr Mt 25, 31-40). We must proclaim Christ’s love for the poor. But for this proclamation to be effective every Christian must become poor…
This is the path that all Christians are called to walk, not only missionaries, priests and religious. The Holy Father calls all Christians to commit themselves to new Evangelisation (Novo Millennio Inuente 40), to proclaim with courage Christ’s love for the poor. In this way we will be an example and stimulus for the world - so lacerated by all forms of violence and discrimination - so that between rich and poor countries there may be a more equal distribution of goods to ensure justice and peace.” (SL) (Agenzia Fides 14/3/2008; righe 48, parole 635)

Chiara Lubich told me: God has great plans for the Chinese people

ITALY - ASIA
Chiara Lubich told me: God has great plans for the Chinese people
Angelo Lazzarotto
Memories of the founder of the Focolare movement, in the words of a PIME missionary. The missionary impulse of the Work of Mary now counts two million members in more than 180 countries. These even include personalities from other religions. In spite of the apparent contradictions, the Love of God builds human history. The “Promised Land” of China.

Milan (AsiaNews) - The life of Chiara Lubich was without a doubt a “divine adventure”. It began as the unconditional response of a young Christian woman to the infinite Love that she had seen even amid the horrors of the last Great War, in the precarious air raid shelters in Trent.
Contemplating the unmatchable model of this total donation, Jesus crucified and abandoned, Chiara had discovered that, in spite of the apparent contradictions, it is the Love of God that builds human history through our free response of love. Her dedication on behalf of the most abandoned was the logical expression of this love and response, and she had felt the need to cry it aloud to all, with her life first and then with her words. She did not have plans of her own, but instead looked to the “score” written in heaven. And God opened the world to her.
Almost 60 years have gone by since I had the privilege of encountering this exceptional experience in Rome. As a young missionary priest, I was immediately struck by the contagious enthusiasm of those who, according to the ideal of Chiara, had found the full realisation of their Christian calling. As I left for Hong Kong a short time later, Chiara assured me that this mission was also hers.
After just a few years the movement also arrived in Asia, in the Philippines and Hong Kong. And she herself personally followed the growth of these seedlings of new Christian life through a number of visits.
The developments of the Work of Mary were one of the most significant expressions of the breath of renewal brought into the Church through Vatican Council II. The power of this impulse appeared in all its splendour with the experience of the hospital centre built by the members of Focolare in Fontem, in Cameroon, which gave new life to tribes heading toward extinction. And from this experience, under the guidance of Chiara, there emerged a new wave of missionary proclamation, starting from the foundation, from contagious mutual love.
In the more than 180 countries where the movement started by Chiara Lubich is present today, there are more than two million people actively involved. These are people at work not only on behalf of the Catholic Church, because the universal vocation is also constantly alive, which Chiara drew from the Gospel from the very beginning. It is significant that there are more than 350 non-Catholic churches and ecclesial communities that have welcomed and are living this evangelical experience.
And it is even more significant that Chiara was invited to share her Christian ideal in the most distinguished assemblies of the Jewish world, and also among the Muslims, the Buddhists, and the Hindus. So much so that today there are about 30,000 members of non-Christian religions who do not hesitate to identify themselves with the human and ethical ideas proposed by the Work of Mary (the official name of the Focolare movement).
My missionary vocation was strengthened by the experience of the Focolare. And there are not a few of my fellow religious, working in Asia and on other continents today, whose vocation was born from or reinforced by their contact and example.
The Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions, which was founded with a special vocation for evangelisation in Asia and Oceania, this year commemorates the 150th anniversary of its arrival on Chinese soil, in Hong Kong. I think that there is a good sign in the love that Chiara always expressed for China, which she referred to as the “Promised Land”. She repeated to me a number of times her conviction that God has great plans for the Chinese people. May her intercession now hasten the realisation of these plans.

by Angelo Lazzarotto

A Message on Divine Mercy

By Ivy

Divine MercyDear friends,

Below is a message on Divine Mercy over Easter from my Medjugorje prayer group. Upon reading about St. Padre Pio, I found that Christ’s apparitions to him and those to Sister Faustina carry a consistent tone. The Diary of Sister Faustina can be found on Amazon, as well as in the link I’ve included below, and it’s a powerful and compelling read.

On Good Friday, is the day to begin our Novena to the Divine Mercy. This Novena starts on Good Friday and ends on the Feast of Mercy which was instituted by Pope John Paul II. The Feast of Mercy is the Sunday after Easter, March 30th.

This is a Novena that is so important for all of us to do. Here’s some more on Divine Mercy. You can also find a lot of information on the EWTN website.

What is Divine Mercy?
The message and devotion to Jesus as The Divine Mercy is based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun who, in obedience to her spiritual director, wrote a diary of about 600 pages recording the revelations she received about God’s mercy. Even before her death in 1938, the devotion to The Divine Mercy had begun to spread.

In the 1930s, Saint Faustina received from the Lord a message of mercy that she was told to spread throughout the world. She was asked to become the apostle and secretary of God’s mercy, a model of how to be merciful to others, and an instrument for reemphasizing God’s plan of mercy for the world.

She wrote and suffered in secret, with only her spiritual director and some of her superiors aware that anything special was taking place in her life. After her death from tuberculosis in 1938, even her closest associates were amazed as they began to discover what great sufferings and deep mystical experiences had been given to this sister of theirs, who had always been so cheerful and humble. She had taken deeply into her heart God’s gospel command to “be merciful even as your heavenly Father is merciful” as well as her confessor’s directive that she should act in such a way that everyone who came in contact with her would go away joyful.

The message of mercy that Saint Faustina received is now being spread throughout the world; she was canonized by the Church on April 30, 2000; and her diary, Divine Mercy in My Soul, has become the handbook for devotion to The Divine Mercy. She would not have been surprised, for she had been told that the message of God’s mercy would spread through her writings for the great benefit of souls.

In a prophetic statement she had declared:
I feel certain that my mission will not come to an end upon my death, but will begin. O doubting souls, I will draw aside for you the veils of heaven to convince you of God’s goodness (Diary 281).

Divine Mercy Definitions

Divine Mercy Sunday
In His revelations to St. Faustina Kowalska, Jesus Christ asked that the first Sunday after Easter be established as Mercy Sunday, the “Feast of Divine Mercy,” when His graces will be available in an extraordinary way to all those who ask. Mercy Sunday is celebrated in thousands of Catholic parishes across the United States. It has already been accorded as a liturgical Feast Day of the Catholic Church in Poland.

The Marians of the Immaculate Conception spearheaded a petition drive, presented those signatures to the Holy Father, and requested that Mercy Sunday be declared an official feast day of the Church worldwide. On Sunday, April 30, 2000, Pope John Paul II formally announced that the Sunday after Easter would henceforth be known as “Divine Mercy Sunday.”

Divine Mercy Image
Jesus commissioned Saint Faustina to have an image painted of Him as He appeared to her in a vision: with red and pale rays coming from the area of His heart. The rays represent the blood and water which flowed from His pierced side on the cross. The image was to be signed: “Jesus, I trust in You!”

The Mercy Message
The message of mercy is that God loves us — all of us, no matter how great our sins. And He wants us to turn to Him so He can bless us. He wants us to recognize His mercy and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share in His joy. It’s as simple as
ABC:

Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him, repenting of our sins and asking for His

Mercy. Be Merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let if flow through us to others.

Completely Trust. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust.

Bishops write Pastoral Letter to faithful: contemplate nature to discover the mystery of life and its Creator, use our goods in generous support of others

AMERICA/CANADA - Bishops write Pastoral Letter to faithful: contemplate nature to discover the mystery of life and its Creator, use our goods in generous support of others

Ottawa (Agenzia Fides) - The Social Affairs Commission of the Canadian Bishops’ Conference has published a Pastoral Letter entitled, “Our Relationship with the Environment: The Need for Conversion.” As part of the United Nations’ International Year of Planet Earth, the Bishops have published a pastoral letter which calls for a collective consciousness to face critical environmental problems affecting the earth. The Bishops state that Canadians are not sufficiently conscious of the impoverished inheritance they are leaving for the generations to come.
In their letter, the Bishops open with a Biblical vision of creation, whose center is the human being. However, man has broken this harmony with nature and, as a consequence, harmony with all creatures. In this sense, they say, we should remember that the goods of the universe are meant for all and therefore, it is an injustice that some continue to accumulate an excessive amount of goods, while masses of people live in misery and without the bare minimum with which to survive on.
With this in mind, the Social Affairs Commission has launched this appeal in efforts to improve the current situation and reestablish this harmony with nature, above all for the good of future generations. The Bishops say that we need “to look at nature with new eyes. Instead of considering it primarily as a resource to be exploited, we will be more inclined to admire its beauty and grandeur. In its own way, nature will open us to the mystery of Life and its Creator.”
Consequently, the Bishops offer some suggestions, such as: “adjusting our way of life to the planet’s available resources”; freeing ourselves of an “obsession to possess and consume” and instead choosing “joyful austerity” or voluntary simplicity; making personal efforts in favour of the environment. The Bishops insist that “responsibility for restoring a healthy relationship with nature falls on each individual, who must re-examine his or her perceptions about possessions and personal comfort. This will demand greater solidarity and new forms of sharing among all Canadians.” (RG) (Agenzia Fides 13/3/2008; righe 26, parole 333)

Formation course for youth leaders of Ecclesial Base Communities

ASIA/TAIWAN - Formation course for youth leaders of Ecclesial Base Communities

Chia Yi (Agenzia Fides) - “A leader as sign and servant of Love”: this was the theme chosen by the Formation Committee in the Diocese of Chia Yi (Taiwan), for their youth leaders of Ecclesial Base Communities. According to Christian Life Weekly, the weekly bulletin of the Archdiocese of Tai Pei, the 3-day formation course organized by the Committee was attended by 116 high school students and 35 young adult members from the Committee and from among the Missionary Animation team. During the course, they discussed the course’s theme, in light of Sacred Scripture. The two main topics were: “being a leader that serves the community” and “Love and Mercy.” The new Bishop Thomas Chung presided the closing Mass and rite of missionary sending of the youth, inviting them to imitate Jesus. The President of the Missionary Committee, in speaking to the young people, reminded them of the importance of their interior growth, following the light of Christian teachings. VATICAN - The Holy See Press Office releases a communique on the Commission for the Church in China

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy See Press Office released the following communique today: The Commission established by Pope Benedict XVI to study the most important questions concerning the life of the Church in China met in the Vatican from 10 to 12 March.

The meeting had as its theme the Letter which the Holy Father sent to Chinese Catholics on 27 May 2007. Participants first examined the reaction to the pontifical document both inside and outside China. They reflected on the theological principles that inspired the Letter in order to comprehend the future prospects they bring for the Catholic community in China. In concrete terms, in the light of the papal text consideration was given to certain important aspects regarding the Church’s mission as ‘instrument of salvation’ for the Chinese people: evangelisation in a world experiencing globalisation; the application, in China’s current situation, of the Vatican Council II doctrine on the nature and structure of the Church; forgiveness and reconciliation within the Catholic community; the requirements of truth and charity; the government of dioceses, which has great relevance for pastoral activity and for the formation of priests, seminarians, religious and lay faithful. In line with the indications expressed by the Pope in His Letter, the will for a respectful and constructive dialogue with the authorities was reiterated. Finally, and still in the light of the pontifical document, the participants exchanged information and experiences concerning the life and activity of the Church in China.

The meeting concluded with a meeting with the Holy Father. He listened to a brief report of the work accomplished over the three days and encouraged the participants to continue their commitment in favour of the Catholic community in China. He also mentioned the forthcoming event of 24 May, the Universal Day of Prayer for the Church in China. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 13/3/2008; righe 25, parole 303)
