Cardinal Urges Faithful to See “Bella”
Film’s Lead Actor Considered Catholic Role Model
HOLLYWOOD, California, OCT. 26, 2007 (Zenit.org).- The film “Bella” is destined to have an extraordinary impact on people’s lives, said the chairman of the U.S bishops’ conference committee on pro-life activities.
Cardinal Justin Rigali, archbishop of Philadelphia, said the film, released today in the United States, “has a message that is so connected to life: to the problems of life, the challenges of life, the value of life.” The cardinal wrote to his fellow bishops encouraging them to host advanced screenings of “Bella” with the hope of spreading the film’s message.
The film won the 2006 People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival.
“Bella” is a story about a young pregnant woman who loses her job, and a man who is unable to recover from a tragic accident in his past. Their friendship changes their lives and brings new hope to both.
The film features actors Eduardo Verástegui, Tammy Blanchard, Manual Pérez and Ali Landry.
Verástegui, a teen heartthrob during his years as a professional musician and actor, is now known as a Catholic role model. After a spiritual conversion that brought him back to Catholicism, he is now an outspoken defender of the right to life, chastity and his faith.
In a Spanish-language interview with the Eternal Word Television Network in July, Verástegui noted that he has clear “the purpose of my life, of our lives — I was not called or born to be an actor, nor created to be famous, nor rich, nor an engineer, a doctor, a success. I was called to be a saint.”
Alejandro Monteverde directed and co-wrote “Bella,” produced by Metanoia Films. Steve McEveety, producer of “Braveheart” and “The Passion of the Christ,” was the executive producer.

WITNESSES - Fr. Jesus Castellano: heart and soul for the Church
Remembered by Chiara Lubich and by the youth
“Fr. Jesus Castellano, a true son of St. Theresa and St. John of the Cross, was one of the leading experts in Spiritual Theology, Mystical Life and Liturgy and consultant of various pontifical offices. His broad knowledge of the history of mysticism gave him the capacity to understand the novelty of the charism of unity, which he put into practice in his life with great purity and the simplicity of a child of the Gospel. Fr. Castellano possessed extraordinary openness: to society, to the challenges of the modern era, and to dialogue at all levels. We thank God for the gift of having known him.”
With these words, Chiara Lubich announced to the Movement all over the world the sudden conclusion of Carmelite Fr. Jesus Castellano’s earthly sojourn on June 15, 2006. He was 65 years old.
Many articles are now being published: biographical notes, conferences, books and articles which will formulate the Church’s gratitude for his life-long, selfless dedication.
The youth, too, would like to be heard. Some students of the summer course of the Focolare Higher Institute of Culture, who had had Fr. Jesus for their professor, highlight the fact that “he was a special person who, in every lesson, offered ‘precious pearls’.” Whoever met him in the sacrament of reconciliation felt “God’s loving gaze” through him. His simple way of sharing his vast knowledge helped others to better understand even such great realities as the Eucharist.
One of his students wrote: “I well remember a lesson Fr. Jesus gave us on the history of charisms (in the Church). He transmitted such great hope and love for the Church through his words, but even more so, through his way of being!”

A Reading from the Gospel of Luke 12:54-59
Jesus said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain–and so it does; and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is going to be hot–and so it is. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time? “Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison. I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”

“Dear children! God sent me among you out of love that I may lead you towards the way of salvation. Many of you opened your hearts and accepted my messages, but many have become lost on this way and have never come to know the God of love with the fullness of heart. Therefore, I call you to be love and light where there is darkness and sin. I am with you and bless you all. Thank you for having responded to my call.” 10/2007
Pact Outlines Rights for Church in Bosnia
President Invites Pope for a Visit
VATICAN CITY, OCT. 25, 2007 (Zenit.org).- With a ceremony of ratification today in the Vatican, the Basic Agreement and the Additional Protocol between the Holy See and Bosnia and Herzegovina entered into effect.
Moments before Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Pope’s secretary of state, and President Zeljko Komsic ratified the agreement, Benedict XVI received in audience the Bosnian leader, who officially invited the Pontiff to visit his country.
The Vatican press office reported that during the meeting with the Pope, “consideration was given to questions concerning the implementation of the agreement itself, and in particular to the Church’s commitment in the fields of education, social and charitable activities, and pastoral assistance to the Catholic faithful.”
“The Catholic community’s contribution for the peaceful coexistence of the various ethnic and religious groups in the country was also stressed,” it said.
Historical
In the Apostolic Palace, Cardinal Bertone, and Komsic — each accompanied by their respective delegations — exchanged the instruments of ratification of the agreement and its additional protocol, signed last April 19 and Sept. 29, respectively.
Both documents have thus entered into effect today, leading Cardinal Bertone to affirm during his discourse, “Today is a historic day […] marking the end of one stage and the beginning of another characterized, we hope, by a long and fruitful collaboration.”
With the agreement, elements of the life and activity of the Catholic community in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be clarified, such as “the recognition of the juridical status of the Catholic Church and its institutions in civil society, its independence in worship and in apostolate, and of its specific contribution in the cultural, educational, pastoral, military, aid and charity fields, and in the press,” Cardinal Bertone said.
In effect, he continued, “The exercise of the religious liberty of each citizen and the religious communities in a legal framework is part of the undeniable presuppositions in today’s Western culture, and it is an indispensable condition for the protection of human rights in all parts of the planet.”
In a multiethnic and plurireligious society such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, “the current agreement becomes the best juridical guarantee to ensure an ordered development of religious life, especially in its public implications,” the cardinal said. And the application of the agreement, he added, “will contribute to overcoming the grave problems inherited from the past and constructing a better future.”

Crackpots
An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole, which she carried across her neck.
One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water.
Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.
After 2 years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream.
The old woman smiled, “Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot’s side?
That’s because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them.”
“For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table.”
Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.”
Each of us has our own unique flaw…But it’s the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding.
You’ve just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.
To all of my crackpot friends, have a great day and remember to smell the flowers, on your side of the path.
Take the time to send this message to all your friends Who have a cracked side…
And God knows how many we are!!!
The Butterfly and Flower
Once there was a man who asked God for a flower…. ….and a butterfly.
But instead God gave him a cactus…. ….and a caterpillar.
The man was sad, he didn’t understand why his request was mistaken.
Then he thought: Oh well, God has too many people to care for… And decided not to question. After some time, the man went to check up on his request that he had left forgotten. To his surprise, from the thorny & ugly cactus a beautiful flower had grown.
And the unsightly carterpillar had been transformed into the most beautiful butterfly.
GOD always does things right! His way is ALWAYS the best way, even if to us it seems all wrong. If you asked God for one thing & received another, TRUST. You can be sure that He will always give you what you need at the appropriate time. What you want… ….is not always what you need! God never fails to grant our petitions, so keep on going for Him without doubting or murmuring. Today’s THORN… Is tomorrow’s FLOWER!
GOD GIVES THE VERY BEST TO THOSE WHO LEAVE THE CHOICES UP TO HIM!
GOD BLESS YOU!

A Reading from the Gospel of Luke 12:39-48
Jesus said to his disciples: “Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”
Then Peter said, “Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?” And the Lord replied, “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time?
Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so. Truly, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property. But if that servant says to himself,
‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk, then that servant’s master will come
on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish the servant severely
and assign him a place with the unfaithful. That servant who knew his master’s will
but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely; and the servant who was ignorant of his master’s will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”

The one who takes your hand but touches your heart is a true Friend.
We seldom think of what we have, but always think of what we miss.
Don’t cry because it’s over now, laugh because it happened. The more precisely you plan, the harder destiny will hit you.
What happens, happens for a reason.
Don’t make an effort, because the best things happen, when you least expect them.
The greatest events aren’t the loudest, but the most quiet hours.
The most difficult lesson to learn is: Which bridge in life to use or which on to break off. Everybody sees how you seem, however, only some know who you are.
He who would like to have something he never had, will have to do something well, that he hasn’t done yet. Perhaps God would want you to become acquainted with many different people in the course of your life, so that when you meet the right ones, you can appreciate and be grateful for them.
Plan for tomorrow but LIVE for today. Love doesn’t require two people look at each other, but that they look together in the same direction. (Antoine de Saint Exupery)
Life is drawing without an eraser.
I wish you always: Air to breath, Fire to warm you, Water to drink and The earth to live in.
I hope you enjoyed it and have a great DAY !

A Reading from the Gospel of Luke 12:13-21
Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”
Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.”
