“My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, for they have been with me now for three days” (Matthew 15:32) Jesus’ words remind me of the suggestion which the Holy Mother made to Jesus at the wedding banquet at Cana : “They have no wine.” (John 2:3) Compassion is common to all men. If, according to man’s character, compassion is such a natural matter, then according to God’s nature, it will even be a matter of course. The compassion Jesus had with the crowd should be our attitude in our daily lives. One of these is forgiveness: “Then Peter approaching asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, :I say to you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”(Matthew 18:21-22) The other is acceptance : “And the scribes and Pharisees brought a woman who has been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle. ‘They said to him ‘Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such a woman. So what do you say.’ They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. “But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he bent down, and wrote on the ground. And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ She replied, ‘No one, sir.’ The Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you Go, (and) from now on do not sin any more.’” The pre-requisite for acceptance is of course keeping a holy life, just like the holiness of Jesus.
