“Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” (Luke 12:51) Jesus is the symbol for man’s opposition. Anyone who follows him will have the same fate. “No slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.” (John 13:16) Therefore, our encounters are a copy of part of Jesus’ encounters. Even though Jesus said that he brought division, in reality it is us who share his destiny. Why is there so much suffering in Jesus’ fate? It’s all because of love. Is suffering essential? Logically of course it is not absolutely required, because everything made by God is good. Unfortunately, ever since the world is created, mankind has divided. The basic division is the relationship between man and God. Genesis has the following interesting description: "Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?" The woman answered the serpent: "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; it is only about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, 'You shall not eat it or even touch it, lest you die.'" But the serpent said to the woman: "You certainly will not die! No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is bad." The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. (See Gen. 3:1-6) Thus, original sin happened. Sin is man’s opposition of God’s will. (If man opens up to God, he will open up to his brother; life will become a mission of joint effort and happiness.) ([Love in Truth]) Papal Encyclical
