“But give what is in your cups and plates to the poor, and everything will be ritually clean for you.” ( Luke 11:41 ) Jesus always uses ‘almsgiving’ as the yardstick of how we live according to the teachings of the Gospel. “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the Kingdom. Sell all your belongings and give the money to the poor. Provide for yourselves purses that don’t wear out, and save your riches in heaven, where they will never decrease, because no thief can get to them, and no moth can destroy them. Doe your heart will always be where your riches are.” ( Luke 12: 32-34 ) When our mind is oriented to God, prosperity in materials is not important anymore. Only then can we follow Jesus whole-heartedly. “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; then come and follow me.” ( Matthew 19:21 ) The conversion of Zacchaeus is the best example. “I will give half of my belongings to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will pay him back four times as much.” ( Luke 19:8 ) Another message of ‘almsgiving’ is ‘justice and peace’. All people are brothers and sisters. Sharing our worldly resources is a sign of unification. Please read what is written about the early church from the Acts of Apostles: “They spent their time in learning from the apostles, taking part in the fellowship, and sharing in the fellowship meals and the prayers. Many miracles and wonders were being done through the apostles, and everyone was filled with awe. All the believers continued together in close fellowship and shared their belongings with one another. They would sell their property and possessions, and distribute the money among all, according to what each one needed. Day after day they met as a group in the Temple, and they had their meals together in their homes, eating with glad and humble hearts, praising God and enjoying the good will of all the people. And every day the Lord added to their group those who were being saved.” ( Acts 2:42-47 ) It is easy to express the real meaning of mutual love if sharing possessions and belongings can be done out of love.
