"Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" (Luke 4:34) The dictionary of Studium Biblicum defines: “Although the devil’s trick was clearly revealed in Genesis 3 and though man in every cultural history believes in the existence of the devil, influenced by his action, yet in the military era of the bible, mention of him was painstakingly avoided. This was evidently to prevent Israelites from worshipping him, just like the other historical Eastern cultures. Devils share the same nature as angels, because they were actually the fallen angels. They fell because of the sin of pride.”(No. 2598) Let us listen to the dialogue between the serpent and Eve: The serpent asked the woman, "Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?" The woman answered the serpent: "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; it is only about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, 'You shall not eat it or even touch it, lest you die.'" But the serpent said to the woman: "You certainly will not die! No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is bad." As a result, in order to “become like God”, she took some of its fruit and ate it; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” The devil was successful in his conspiracy with human, getting together to oppose God. The devil’s question “What have you to do with us?” exposes the identity of Jesus the Messiah appropriately. The devil fully understood the prophet Isaiah’s prophesy about the messiah: “The spirit of the Lord had descended on me, because he had anointed me with oil, sending me to spread good news to the poor, telling the prisoners about release, proclaiming eyesight to the blind, granting freedom to the oppressed, expressing the kind years of the Lord.” This stubborn selfish way of life is exactly the opposite of what was declared. Jesus has already conquered the power of darkness, therefore we do not have to be afraid. But we have to be careful - do not let ourselves fall into the temptation of pride.
