“I say to you, something greater than the temple is here.” (Matthew 12:6) The Pharisees often stressed the importance of the Law of Moses. However, they ignored the spirit of the law, which was to love God above all and love each other as we love ourselves. The Laws of Israelis were not rigid provisions or unchangeable laws. On the contrary, it continues to develop progressively according to the change of time and environment. At the time of Jesus, the Jews made use the law to unite the people together and enable them to carry forward their religion, it turned out that the law became rigid legal rules and only a patriotic tool. “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5:17) “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘You shall not kill!’ and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raqa’, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, ‘You fool’, will be liable to fiery Gehenna.” (Matthew 5:21) The commandments of the gospel are no longer the law belonging to one nation, but they are related to the entire world. The Gospel of Mark brings out the theme that Jesus was the legislator of mankind: “They came to Capernaum, and on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.” (Mark 1:21-22) This time Jesus spoke on behalf of His disciples who were hungry and picked the heads of grain to eat, “I say to you, something greater than the temple is here.” St Paul wrote the best annotation as follows: “Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God on their behalf is for salvation. I testify with regard to them that they have zeal for God, but it is not discerning. For, in their unawareness of the righteousness that comes from God and their attempt to establish their own (righteousness), they did not submit to the righteousness of God.” (Romans 10:1-4) Lord Jesus, You are our way and life.
