“One soldier thrust his lance into Jesus’ side, and immediately blood and water flowed out.” (John 19:34) The narrated scene of “thrust the lance into Jesus’ side” was only found in the Gospel of John. In fact, John was the only one who had accompanied Holy Mother under the cross. Upon witnessing the holy sacrifice of Jesus, the centurion (Romans) exclaimed, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” The very solider who “thrust the lance into Jesus’ side” was probably that centurion. Gospel of John chapter 19 verse 35 recorded: “An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true.” The witness could be the centurion or John himself. In any case, the sacrifice of Jesus, in particular the reality of “the outflow of blood and water” had moved the hearts of all. “Blood” is a symbol of the Sacrament of the Holy Communion, while “Water” symbolizes the Sacrament of Baptism. For the Jews, “Blood” is also a symbol of life therefore they do not eat any meat with blood. It might also be for the same reason the disciples turned a deaf ear to Jesus’ words of “eat my body and drink my blood”. “Water” has the ability to purify and nourish. The baptism from John even had the power to absolve. Of course, Jesus left us “the Sacrament of Baptism” which has the power to sanctify human souls, so that mankind can sustain the life of God. “The image of the Divine Mercy’’ was the image how Jesus had presented himself to Sister Faustina. Jesus’ message is, “His mercy to mankind is abundant. “Do not be unbelieving, but believe.” (John 20:27)
