“You are the salt of the earth…the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:13-16) In the Old Testament, salt has a significant meaning in the setting up of the covenant. The text of Number mentioned that the covenant made between God and the Israelites was called “Inviolable covenant” (Number 18:19) “On every cereal offering, salt is a necessity. Do not let the salt of the covenant of your God be lacking from it, ‘On every offering you shall offer salt”’. (Leviticus 2:13) In the letter of St Paul to the Colossians, “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt.” (Colossians 4:6) This shows that salt is not the protagonist, but its existence is indispensable! As the saying goes, “If there is no light, there would be no life!” Genesis Chapter one: “In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss, while a mighty wind swept over the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” (Genesis 1:1-3) Light is not only a creation of God, but also a sign to reveal His presence, “To the Israelites the glory of the LORD was seen as a consuming fire on the mountaintop.” (Exodus 24:17) Luke called Jesus as “A light for revelation to the Gentiles.” (Luke 2:32) “You are the salt of the earth…the light of the world.” indicates that the disciples should perform charitable acts in the world, at the same time fulfilling their responsibilities as true Christians. St. John said, “God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say, ‘We have fellowship with him,’ while we continue to walk in darkness, we lie and do not act in truth.” (1 John 1:5-6) May God’s word always be the light of our life!
