“Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.”(Jn 6:53) St. Paul gave us this commentary: “The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?” (1 Cor 10:16) Paul was admonishing the Christians at Corinth against being overly confident for having been called to enter into the Church. He reminded them that they still can be lost after entering the church, so they should not abuse the freedom that the gospel gives them, but should rather be careful and and avoid such dangers as idolatry. Although Christians has been freed from the sinful world, we still need to be constantly nourished, through the sacrament of the Eucharist. When Jesus arrived at Bethany, his friend Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days, and Lazarus’ sister Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.’ Martha said to him, ‘I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.”And Jesus told her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life”. The ‘resurrection’ and ‘life’ that Jesus talked about is the life of the triune God. Jesus speaks of the intimate relationship between Him and those who accept Him as ‘eating His flesh’ and ‘drinking His blood’, and He kept using such wording even when people murmured about it. Even when some left, Jesus did not demand that they stay; rather, He asked His disciples nonchalantly, “Do you also want to leave?”, and Peter answered Him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” Indeed, we, too, do not understand a lot of things; yet we believe that everything that Christ has spoken are true!
