“You seek me, not because you have seen miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves, and were filled.” (John 6:26) Jesus knew people's minds as the miracle of feeding five thousand with five loaves and two fishes attracted many people to follow his teachings. He took that opportunity to imply that He would establish the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist at a later day. Hence, Jesus added, “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life.” Our initial motivation to follow Jesus was probably due to some temporal benefits. As the two two brothers, John & Jacob, had requested, "Please bestow us in your glory, one sitting to your right, the other at your left." Of course, Jesus did not accept their request and only reminded them to be prepared to drink the sorrowful cup of salvation. Here we can see that Jesus does not mind our old way of thinking; it is simply important that we start to learn to show generosity toward other. “[W]ork...for food that endures for eternal life.” Does this statement resonate with you? In my opinion, the word “work” is very enlightening. We may carry a laid-back attitude while following Jesus, but this is absolutely not what Jesus expects of us. “The Kingdom of God requires strength to take.”
