“Jesus appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised.” (Mark 16:14) Mary Magdalene was the first woman to witness the opened tomb, followed by Peter & John. In the Gospel of John, he had shown that he believed the prophetic of Jesus’ resurrection. The hearsay didn’t stop these two disciples, with disappointment of leaving Jerusalem. Fortunately, Jesus appeared on the road and explained to them the prophecy of Messiah mentioned in the Scripture. The rest of the disciples were still in doubt. Therefore, Jesus rebuked them for their disbelief and hardness of heart. Jesus rebuked them not to lose faith in Him, but for their disbelief in those who were chosen by Him. After Jesus’ resurrection, not only the apostles, but other disciples and women have served an important role as witnesses for Jesus. As we can see, those witnesses chosen by Jesus were not selected according to their status or reputation, but instead, He chose those who have repented from their sins. Mary Magdalene was a good example. She is the one that Jesus had driven out seven demons in the past. When we know how to trust God, we at the same time, also know how to trust others.
