“Then the other apostle also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.” (John 20:8) “The other apostle” described in the Gospel according to John was John himself. He let Peter entered the tomb first, showing his respect for Peter. “He saw and believed” showed that he did not fully understand the messages of Jesus about His resurrection. When he saw the burial cloths which were left in the tomb, he knew that the rumour that His body was stolen had no ground. This was because it was illogical that whoever took away the body left the burial cloths. John’s faith was not based solely on the circumstantial evidences, but rather on his simple faith in the Lord. While having the Passover dinner, he sat by Jesus and leaned his head against Jesus’ chest. From this we can have a glimpse of his reliance on Jesus. He was with Peter and Jacob when witnessing Jesus raising Jairus’ daughter from death, witnessing the Transformation on Mount Tabor, and His agonizing praying in the Gethsemane Garden. All these experiences enabled John to affirm the genuineness of Jesus’ prophecy about His sufferings. Faith is a gift God gives us without conditions. However, this gift, as taught by Jesus, is like a vase and we have to preserve it with utmost care, and John was able to do so.
