Soon after I returned to Hong Kong, I received an invitation from Chinese faithful in Honolulu for me to preside over a weekend retreat which would last for two days. I happily accepted the invitation because of their sincerity. In Honolulu, the Chinese Catholic community was established by Fr. Lo Charm Ming and the mission was subsequently taken up by Fr. Ng Bing Yee of the Salesians. In 2005, Fr. Ng was transferred to serve in San Francisco. The Chinese Catholic community here is presently made up of parishioners from The Star of the Sea Church and the St. Patrick’s Church.

There were twenty something faithful taking part in today’s retreat, with a theme of “Ecumenism in Christ”

Before Jesus’ departure (the Last Supper), He prayed, “ Father, may all of them be one, as you are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us.”

Every community of faith shall grow only in the presence of Jesus. To love one another is the basis of keeping the presence of Him. “Whenever you gather together in my name (of loving each other), I will be there.”

To keep the love towards one another, one needs to put in efforts and be equipped with the gift of God. All in all, the gist is to put into practice Jesus’ advice, “ Whoever shall accept the one of the little ones, he accepts me.”

I have served in not less than seven parishes. Notwithstanding the differences in varying degrees with personnel and organizational structure, these parishes are basically similar. Every believer is the beloved son or daughter of Christ. I may not be welcome by everyone everywhere, but I feel satisfied as I always try my very best in loving each and every faithful and colleagues. Anyway, the ideal on “ecumenism” is ultimately the work of God, as Jesus has, instead of asking the disciples the task, you have to unite together, chosen to pray for this ideal in the words that “You have to love one another, as I have loved you”.
