Articles 1399 and 2318 of the Canon Law, which were established in 1918, were abrogated by Pope Paul VI, in the form of Motu Proprio, on December 7, 1965.

Section 5 of Canon 1399 forbade the reading of books that report new revelations, visions, prophecies, miracles and adorations that have not been verified by the Church.

Canon 2318 carried penalties against those who violated the laws of censure and prohibition.

The Church relies on the conscience and judgment of the faithful to follow the work of the Holy Spirit within the church.

From my understanding, to decide on the authenticity of apparitions, the Church will start investigating only 25 years after cessation of such apparitions. Taking the apparition of our Blessed Virgin Mary in Medjugorje as an example, up till present, she is still appearing to three visionaries everyday at 6:40 p.m. local time (there were initially six visionaries; our Lady has revealed ten secrets to three of them and so will appear to them only once a year).

Although the local college of bishops did not authenticate the apparition, it is beyond any doubt that Medjugorje has become a place of prayers
