“So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” (Matthew 24:44) When Christ was born in Bethlehem, there were only three wise men from the East and the neighborhood shepherds, who worshipped Jesus. The remaining residents of Jerusalem and Bethlehem were all absent. As a matter of fact, the Jews who were very familiar with prophesies, especially the Pharisees and the Priests, all knew that the messiah could come at any time and would be born in Bethlehem. To them the messiah was a king, someone with power and great accomplishments. They could not imagine that this messiah was born in a deserted cave. No wonder when Jesus came out to preach, his words and action were unimpressive, because he was not a Pharisee and did not belong to the priesthood. To them he was only a self-taught preacher. Wherever he went, he was not always welcomed. But precisely in those treacherous circumstances could Jesus reveal his real kingship, be a real prophet and a real priest. He overcame the human nature of controlling others and he was bold in speech, shedding his blood and water for others. When He comes again Jesus wishes to see that our ambition would be to serve others as ourselves just like He would, and have the courage to lay down our humble selves for the sake of others.
