The newly-appointed Archbishop of Toronto: Archbishop Thomas Collins

The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, announced on December 16 that he has named Archbishop Thomas Collins, presently Archbishop of Edmonton, as the next Archbishop of Toronto. Archbishop Collins will replace the resigning His Eminence, Aloysius Cardinal Ambrozic. Both Archbishop Collins and Bishop Peter Hundt belong to the Diocese of Hamilton. Archbishop Collins was ordained in 1973, and he studied Scripture at the Biblical Institute in Rome where he received a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture in 1978. Archbishop Collins was ordained Bishop and installed as Bishop of St. Paul in 1997. Two years later, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Edmonton.

"He's a man of initiative. He's got a great vision of things, and he's got a great love of the church, and a great love of the priesthood, and a great love of the people," said Edmonton chancellor Fr. Gregory Bittman. There has been monthly lectio divina and evening prayer services at St. Joseph's Basilica, and recently a chapel in a downtown shopping mall.

"It's prayer. In a sense, it's what I do now when reading Scripture alone.” Archbishop Collins said. "He's very approachable. He doesn't have any kind of aloofness," said Rev. Dr. Bruce Miller, a United Church minister in Edmonton.

While we welcome Archbishop Collins, let us pray to God for him as well. (Reference: Catholic Register)

P.S.: I invite everyone to continue to pray for the health of Archbishop Anthony Meagher of the Archdiocese of Kingston, who has also been the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Toronto.
