“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word.” (John 14:23) In the beginning of his gospel, John affirmed that the Word of God was God. “In the beginning was the Word. And the Word was with God and the Word was God” (John 1:1) Followed the preaching by John the Baptist, John the Gospel affirmed that Jesus’ identity was the Word of God, “Yes, I have seen! And I declare that this is the Chosen One of God.” (John 1:34) “Keep my word” refers to trust and following the Gospel’s teachings. We might carry the wrong idea that due to our limited understanding about the Gospel, we won’t be able to live out the spirit of it. This is an illusion. We must bear in mind that no matter how many pieces the Eucharist has been split into, the Blessed Sacrament is considered to be the entire Body of Christ. Likewise, one sentence or the words from the entire Bible share the same effect. When I was young, I worked as volunteer at a nursing home during my holidays. There was a time when I had to feed an elderly person and in order to finish quickly my duties; I started to feed the elderly in a rush. Suddenly, a voice came into my mind, “Whenever you did this to these little ones who are my brothers and sisters, you did it to me.” Although I do not consider myself to be well versed in the bible, if we are willing to follow the teaching of Jesus, the Word of God will still be active in our hearts. There was another time when I was studying in Rome. One evening after dinner, I felt tired so I decided to take a walk to the recreation room in the basement. I saw a group of African students who were practicing their singing. One of them invited me to hold the drum for them, so that he can concentrate on drumming. After 15 minutes, I started to feel restless and tried to find an excuse to return to my studies. However my initial intention to come here was to escape the lesson preparation! For the sake of loving this group of lovely African students, I insisted to stay until the last song. I stood with them for more than two hours and did not feel tired at all. It might be due to the effectiveness of acting out the love of the Gospel. Jesus’ return to us is always greater than what we give out.
