“I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned, you have revealed them to the childlike.” (Matthew 11:25) Jesus was talking about the scribes and scholars of the Law. Although they were well educated, they knew nothing about the essence of the Gospel. On the other hand, the disciples who followed Jesus, with the exception of a few persons, were mostly uneducated. However, they could understand in depth Jesus’ teachings. “When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Phillipi he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter said I reply, ‘You are the messiah, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus said to him in reply, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.’ (Matthew 16:13-17) Peter was a fisherman. Although he did not receive much education, he could speak out the heavenly Father’s revelation. On the one hand, he was specially chosen and, on the other hand, modesty was his characteristic. “(Jesus) said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.’ Simon said in reply, ‘Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.’ When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signalled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they are in danger of sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, ‘Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.’”(Luke 5:4-8) This manner of “modesty” is the “way of the childlike” which Jesus talked about.
