“I have told you this so that you may not fall away.” (John 16:1) Jesus spoke that his disciples will be persecuted in the future as if he himself has been persecuted. Jesus explained that people persecuted him because they do not know the Father. According to the notation of Studium Biblicum, “In the latter part of the Jewish era, the Israelis were influenced by Greek philosophy. From the beginning, they viewed God as great, noble, almighty, omniscient and unreachable. The relationship between God and the Jewish has been far less like in the preceding period of the Old Testament that is as close as father and son. (See no. 277) This explains why the Jews of Jesus’ time could not accept the carpenter’s son to be the glorified Messiah. Jesus was persecuted for he proclaimed himself to be the Son of God. No wonder Caiaphas the high priest tore his robes when Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you: From now on you will see 'the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power' and 'coming on the clouds of heaven.'” (Matthew 26:64) God’s plan and the human mind are different for the lack of humility makes humankind difficult to understand and accept. Therefore, Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3-4) Our faith is shaken mainly because we have forgotten God’s holy words and the acts of Christ. In fact, Jesus made it clear, “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first.” (John 15:18) Our fates are linked up with that of Jesus closely.
