“Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil made from genuine aromatic nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair; the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.” (John 12:3) Mary is the sister of Lazarus and Martha. This time Jesus came to visit after He resurrected Lazarus. Many people also came to visit this family out of curiosity. Mary treated Jesus in such a way because she felt that Jesus was going to leave the human world soon. The scenery was very touching because Mary had a profound feeling on Jesus. According to Luke, the character of Mary was recorded as follow: “Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary (who) sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him to speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me." The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her." (Luke 10:38-42) In the tomb of Lazarus, Mary knelt down before the feet of Jesus and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." (See John 11:32) Mary felt deeply the love of Jesus to her family and only true love will not care for things in return. The greedy Judas Iscariot had another thought. “Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days' wages and given to the poor?” John the historian made the following remark, “He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief and held the money bag and used to steal the contributions.” (John 12:6) When we are stingy with our time to communicate (pray) with God, does it not make us any different to Judas Iscariot? The close relationship between Mary and Jesus comes from her restrained habit. The lack of this virtue will be hard to understand tacitly about heavenly matter. Mary does not mind the peculiar view of others because she only focused on the preparation of the Lord’s death. Only those hearts which link with Jesus can emit the fragrance of love to the Lord.
