“How can you believe, when you accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that comes from the only God?” (John 5: 44) This time, Jesus’ speech was targeted towards the Jews, but mainly to the scribes and the Pharisees. However, these people had bad intentions, as they hoped to find flaws from Jesus so that they could charge him in the Sanhedrin. Jesus pointed out frankly that the truth cannot enter the bottom of their hearts and souls, for they only accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that comes from God”. Hence, no matter what Jesus said, they would inevitably not accept because their minds were concealed. “He came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue. They were astonished and said, "Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter's son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? Are not his sisters all with us? Where did this man get all this?" And they took offense at him.” (Matthew 13:54-57) Despite Jesus’ words show wisdom and performed great miracles, the people remain untouched and insensitive. Therefore Jesus made a comment out of his own personal feelings, “For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, 'He is possessed by a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, 'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” (Matthew 11:18-19) After all where does the human’s heart and soul look towards? Jesus hit the truth with a single remark, “You accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that comes from the only God?” This is the essence of original sin: "The moment you eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is bad.” (Genesis 3:5) “You will be like God” means that mankind is no longer subordinate to God. The indiscriminative love preached by Jesus becomes an obstacle for many people.
