“While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white.” (Luke 9:29) The Gospel of Matthew described Jesus’ appearance as “shining like the sun” (Matthew 17:2) Imagine how bright and shiny Jesus’ face, which cannot be seen directly! This true light is originally the word of God. “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him.” (John 1:9-10) The original face of Jesus was pure and joyous. However at that time the Jewish tribes, especially the religious leaders could not accept a carpenter who was full of wisdom. Moreover, he never compromised. As a result they had to “get rid of” this eyesore to avoid being publicity persecuted (for them it was also an insult!) What was the purpose of Jesus’ transfiguration? A reason could be to calm the three disciples while they panicked, as Jesus knew his time has come, he will need to shed his blood and suffer from great pain. Anyhow, the three disciples could hardly stand the weakness revealed by Jesus. While he was praying at Gethsemane, they all fell asleep over and over again (to escape!) Another time, Peter undoubtedly said that he would risk his life for Jesus. However just as Jesus predicted, Peter would deny Him three times when the cock crowed. Nevertheless, Jesus still tried to relief them by touching lightly, “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Jesus is merciful to us at all times, he would rather give up his own glory in order to help us to live out the life in God.
