“Jesus said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He stretched it out, and his hand was restored.” (Mark 3:5) Not only is Jesus the lord of the sabbath, He is also the lord for all creation. Even the devil and the storm need to listen to Him: “Be silent, and come out of him!” (Mark 1:25) [Commanding the unclean spirits in Capernaum] “Peace! Be still!” (Mark 4:39) [Calming the storm] “Stand up and take your mat and walk[.]” (Mark 2:11) [Healing a paralytic] “Stretch out your hand.” (Mark 3:5) [Healing the man with the withered hand] “Little girl, get up!” (Mark 5:41) [Restoring the life of the daughter of Jarius] “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” (Mark 1:17) [Calling the disciples] From these verses, we can see that Jesus speaks with a sense of command. Nevertheless, when Jesus is teaching, He tends to speak with a sense of advice. Regardless of whether the teaching is command-like or advice-like, the Word of God is always an expression of God’s will and we cannot treat the teachings lightly. As long as we obey God’s will, we are living in God.
