“Those whom he cured, who were variously afflicted, were many, and so were the demons he expelled.”( Mark 1:34 ) Usually diseases were regarded as punishments from God, or disasters related to Satan, although there were exceptions. “As he walked along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. His disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, was it his sin or that of his parents that caused him to be born blind?’ ‘Neither,’ answered Jesus. ‘It was no sin, either of this man or of his parents. Rather, it was to let God’s work show forth in him.’”( John 9: 1 – 3 ) Many patients were healed by Jesus. Not only were they healed physically, they were also healed mentally, because Jesus, who has the power to look into the bottom of our hearts, always said, “Your faith has saved you.” Diseases are not always from Satan, but he will try his best to weaken our will power so as to keep God at a distance. “Then Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward was hungry. The tempter approached and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to turn into bread.’” ( Matthew 4: 1 – 3 ) The devil did not leave the Son of God alone, let alone the mankind who is weak in his will power. To obtain health, the first we need to do is to pray, and the next is to fast and to offer sacrifices. After Jesus cured a boy who was possessed, his disciples asked him, “Why could we not expel it?” Jesus replied, “This kind does not leave but by prayer and fasting.” ( cf Matthew 17: 19 – 21 ) When Jesus was praying in Gethsemani, he said to Peter, “Asleep, Simon? You could not stay awake for even an hour? Be on guard and pray that you may not be put to the test. The spirit is willing but nature is weak.” ( cf Mark 14: 37 – 38 )
