“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17) This is how Jesus called to his first disciples, who consisted of Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John. They immediately left their father, abandoned their nets and then followed Him. According to the Gospel of Luke, the disciples had worked all night and caught nothing. Later they followed Jesus’ command and placed the boat into deep water and caught a great number of fish. Simon Peter fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” (Luke 5:10) Jesus has shown us that he will not neglect choosing those who are weak. According to the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus met John & James, they were repairing the nets with their father Zebedee. “Immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him.” (Matthew 4:22) We can see that Jesus has quite the charisma. Why is that Jesus does not share the same level of attraction towards us? The only explanation is that, we are just like the rich young man. He has the desire to follow Jesus, but lacked the courage to sell his property and give them to the poor. That is, we are not completely put aside our selfishness and allow Christ to bring us to conversion, our hearts remain closed!
